The Looking Men
by James R. Kristofic

This short story, “The Looking Men,” is the first of many tales of a group of knights and priests called by their own tragic destinies to battle mysterious, dark forces in a medieval world often one shadow away from death and chaos.

Their story grows out of the myths and folktales surrounding the bubonic plague – the Black Death – and its spread across Europe that left entire villages dying, crops rotting in fields, animals wandering abandoned streets, and starving survivors turning to suicide. “The Looking Men” supposes what may have happened as people sought the cause of this new terror, when stories of vampires, werewolves, and wandering undead phantoms haunted the firesides even after knights and pilgrims returned in triumph from their first Crusade to the Holy Land.

But the Looking Men know the true cause of this strange Black Death lies not in some monster, but in a horror too strange for a child’s tale. Theirs is an enemy that hides in the light of day and stalks its victims from within. And the Looking Men must seek and stand against that enemy before it spreads beyond control.
